The next game in the Like a Dragon series isn’t quite what you’re expecting, a seafaring pirate adventure starring the one and only Goro Majima. The new game was announced today as part of the Ryu Ga Gotoku Summit, where the studio also showed off a first look at Majima in the live-action Amazon TV series, debuting in October.

Seemingly a spinoff of this year’s Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth , Pirate Yakuza stars Majima in his very first solo leading role, bringing back the series’ action combat system for a brand new story. Majima is one of Like a Dragon’s most popular, and infamous, characters, previously appearing as one of the protagonists of Yakuza 0 and then a side-story in Yakuza Kiwami 2 .

Set six months after the events of Infinite Wealth , Majima wakes up on a mysterious island with amnesia – quickly finding himself under attack from pirates. As you might expect from the ridiculous premise hijinks ensue, and Majima finds himself the captain of his own ship, setting off for the criminal paradise of “Madlantis” to find a legendary treasure.

The game does take place entirely in Hawaii, meaning players will get the chance to explore Honolulu City once again. We’ve also seen a handful of minigames returning, including karaoke, go-kart racing, food delivery, and something new called “Masato’s Love Journey.”

However according to information from RGG Studio, Pirate Yakuza will have three maps to explore – including sea exploration. You’ll be able to upgrade your ship and crew to fight on the high seas, and Majima has two combat styles to swap between – his iconic Mad Dog style and the new Sea Dog style.

Interestingly, Pirate Yakuza also continues the series’ tradition of casting celebrities, with AEW’s (All Elite Wrestling) Samoa Joe making an appearance.

While the presentation focused on the new pirate-themed game, a recent leak also pretty much confirmed a new mobile game for the franchise is on the way in the near future, titled Yakuza Wars .

Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii launches on February 28, 2025 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
