STATEWIDE –The state of Indiana is supposed to get some rain in the coming days, but it’s not expected to alleviate much of the drought conditions.

“We’re looking at amounts over of the next seven-day period resulting in about an inch of rain, maybe two if we’re lucky,” said Joe Nield, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Indianapolis.

Nield believes there could be some light rain Friday afternoon and evening, but that the heavier amounts are likely to come afterwards.

“We go into Sunday and onward where our temperatures will moderate and be in the 70s for most of next week. The more substantial rain chances will be from Sunday into Tuesday,” said Nield.

Nield says if there is a strong storm, that will likely come Friday afternoon and won’t last long.

“Regardless of how much rain we get this weekend, we’re going to need a lot more than the couple of inches we are projected to get if we want to resolve the long-term drought that we’ve been seeing,” said Nield.

Most of the state is under moderate drought, but there are a few spots dealing with extreme drought. More than 60 of Indiana’s 92 counties are now under burn bans. That means people who live in those counties are being told not to burn things outside because of the elevated risk for causing fires.
