Jon Lovett faced some good-natured ribbing when he returned to Pod Save America after being booted from Survivor in one episode.
Lovett, a former speechwriter for both former President Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton , was voted off of Survivor in the two-hour season premiere. Fellow Obama aides Jon Favreau , Tommy Vietor , and Dan Pfeiffer complimented their fellow host’s “poker face” as he never let up that was kicked off the show so early.
“I thought you won because you were so cocky about it,” Vietor said after Favreau introduced their “first and last Survivor recap.”
Lovett sarcastically said it was “not the most embarrassing thing to happen to me in the media this week.”
A series of clips of Lovett on the show played where the age gap between him and the others is clear (Lovett is 41) and he at one point mentions his podcast, which just one person says they’ve “maybe” listened to.
“Why do you think you lost to the guy who had a physical and emotional meltdown?” Vietor asked, referring to contestant Andy Rueda , who had a breakdown during the episode where he worried his team was voting him off, resulting in host Jeff Probst calling medical support because he was so concerned for the spiraling Rueda.
Lovett said the breakdown cleared Rueda as a threat to anyone and then all eyes turned to Lovett.
“Once Andy had his breakdown, I think basically it wasn’t really about who was friends and who wasn’t friends. Andy had basically imploded in front of 18 people, all of whom didn’t need to worry about him as a threat, and I had been kind of funny and charming in front of everybody,” he said.
“Those were in the other scenes?” Favreau asked, laughing.
Pfeiffer offered his friend a compliment, saying he laughed through the entire episode and he deserves credit for putting himself out there.
“I turned my TV on to a mud-covered Lovett trying to do a puzzle, which is when I started laughing and I didn’t stop. I’ll say a couple things. One, this is something you care about, you obviously care about Survivor a lot and you did put yourself out there, so I think you get credit for that,” he said.
“This is how you talk about Joe Biden’s speeches!” Lovett said to laughter.
“He lasted longer than you did,” Pfeiffer responded.
Lovett acknowledged his heavy rotation in promo ads made his appearance a bit of a “bait and switch,” but he said Probst and CBS were genuinely disappointed he got voted out so early.
“I do think they were genuinely disappointed that I didn’t go further, and I take that as a compliment,” he said.
