Earth To Get A Second Moon For Two Months, "Don't Be Suspicious," Says NASA

The moon, the closest celestial body to Earth, will have a new neighbor starting next week: a second moon. An asteroid will begin its 57-day orbit around Earth, giving Earth a "temporary second moon." NASA started watching 2024 PT5, the asteroid, on August 7th.

Important Details

The asteroid originated from the Arjuna asteroid belt, a collection of asteroids with orbits similar to Earth that are 93 million miles away. Next week, it will momentarily mimic our own moon's orbit around the Earth, and it's roughly the size of a bus.

Although the mini-moon will only be in Earth's orbit for two months, it will remain near us for many more, reaching its closest in January 2025. Then it'll eventually come back to Earth's orbit in 2055.

Is The Mini-Moon Visible?

Unfortunately, due to its size, the mini-moon will not be visible to the unaided eye and probably not even visible with most home telescopes.

Fun Fact

Part of our moon may be on asteroid 2024 PT5 due to either striking our moon already or picking up ejecta from something else hitting the moon.

Why The Suspicion

If you keep your eyes to the sky and listen to the worldwide chatter, there seems to be an alarming amount of wackiness going on. They tell us all these "anomolies" are only freaks of nature. Like never before, the Northern Lights have been seen in every single month in every single state this year. They're seeing two suns in China. Two moons in Dubai. The sun seems to be getting stronger on the EMP storm scale, and Earth is wobbling a little more. It's hard not to be suspicious when every day there's a new event we're told not to worry about.
