This is exactly what happened to Michelle and Scott Ellermets—a newlywed couple who both lost their longtime spouses—on their wedding day. Michelle and Scott Ellermets got married on September 7 in North Carolina’s Outer Banks and their celebration is special for multiple reasons. These two not only were gifted with each other after losing both of their longtime spouses in 2023 but they were also granted a double rainbow when the forecast had predicted a day of heavy rain and cloudy skies.
Their ceremony occurred on the beach and photographer Chelsea Schaefer was able to capture footage of the couple and the double rainbow. The viral TikTok wedding video, which has now been viewed over 4 million times, is touching the hearts of internet users.

A double rainbow is rare, but it’s always a good sign if you’re lucky enough to witness this phenomenon. It occurs when the sun is low in the sky and the second rainbow is more pastel in color.
According to The Meteorological Office , “Double rainbows are formed when sunlight is reflected twice within a raindrop with the violet light that reaches the observer's eye coming from the higher raindrops and the red light from lower raindrops.”

The Ellermets’ love story after loss
Michelle Ellermets, 50, and Scott Ellermets, 59 told their story on Good Morning America where they shared that they met in a local grief group after losing their respective partners the previous year.
Michelle and her previous husband Jonathan were married for over 23 years until he died of a heart attack in January 2023, while Scott had been married to his wife Lisa for 29 years before she passed away in June of the same year due to an illness.
The couple lives in Washington D.C. and Scott joined a local grief group at the end of 2023. "I joined Facebook in early December and a [local] widows [and] widowers website,” Scott Ellermets said during the interview. “And when I got on it, I saw that somebody was Facebook friends with my sister. It happened to be Michelle.”
He decided to reach out and soon the two met up in person. They hit it off instantly when they first met and described each other as “thoughtful” and “kind.”
"We were just friends at first for a while, and then the friendship just grew," Michelle Ellermets explained. She didn’t think she was going to get married again and told Scott this from the beginning, but somewhere along the way, their feelings for each other shifted out of the friend zone.
They found they had a lot in common because of their age, their familial roles and their hobbies and interests Michelle and Scott had a strong bond since they met and didn’t want to waste any more time not being together, which is ultimately what led to them to marriage.
"At our age, when you know, why not? We don't want to waste any time. You can't take your days for granted," said Michelle Ellermets.
Scott Ellermets echoed this sentiment. "Another thing that frankly, our spouses' deaths taught us is you cannot count on tomorrow.”
The wedding was a joyous occasion with family and friends and the couple agreed that the appearance of the double rainbow was a “blessing.”
