NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The NYPD released on Friday evening body camera footage of a police shooting last Sunday on a Brooklyn subway, during which officers fired their weapons at a knife-wielding man. The suspect, two bystanders and an officer were injured in the incident.

The incident began when the suspect, Derell Mickles, 37, evaded paying the fare and entered the subway station. Officers followed him, and when they recognized that he was carrying a knife, they used their tasers, which were ineffective.

Police warned Mickles several times to drop the weapon, to no avail. After weaving in and out between a stationary subway train and the station platform, they opened fired at him.

Mayor Eric Adams said in a statement Friday that based off the initial review by the NYPD, the officers were justified in their use of the weapons as Mickles "brandished a dangerous weapon and put officers’ lives at risk."

"As a young man, and throughout my career as a former police officer and as an elected official, I’ve spent my career fighting for both public safety and police reform, and I have been clear that I expect a Police Department that is professional, impartial, and just," the mayor said. "The NYPD continues to work diligently to ensure New Yorkers are both safe and policed fairly."

Adams said he would avoid commenting further as the formal review continues.
