Cowboys Named Top Candidate to Land Super Bowl-Winning Coach

    By Chris Phelps,

Over the previous three NFL seasons, coach Mike McCarthy has led the Dallas Cowboys to a 12-5 record in the regular season. But in the playoffs, the Cowboys face disappointment after disappointment.

Last season, the No. 2 Cowboys hosted the No. 7 Green Bay Packers, who had just squeezed their way into the postseason. Dallas was handed a 48-32 loss and another early playoff exit.

The loss to the New Orleans Saints in Week 2 gave similar vibes as the latest playoff loss, with many saying the Cowboys looked unprepared. And Coach McCarthy is getting the blame, once again.

McCarthy's future in Dallas could be decided by his playoff success. But many are already calling for his replacement, and a name that came to mind was former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick.

Jacob Camenker of USA Today had the Cowboys on the top of his potential teams that could sign the six-time Super Bowl winner. Dallas was listed ahead of other teams, such as the New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants.

Camenker mentions that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones' "patience with McCarthy may finally wear thin if Dallas can't go on a deep playoff run this season."

Belichick has arguably the most playoff experience of any coach, including an NFL record 12 Super Bowl appearances, which includes his time as an assistant coach for the Giants. Even though McCarthy coached the Green Bay Packers to a Super Bowl, signing Belichick with his Hall of Fame-worthy experience could help the Cowboys get over the hump.

Unless Dallas absolutely collapses during the regular season, don't expect Jones to make a decision on McCarthy until the offseason. But the idea of Belichick in Dallas could be scary for the NFL.
