Storm brings rain, snow, flooding to San Bernardino County

A late summer storm brought light rain to the Victor Valley, snow to the San Bernardino Mountains and heavy flooding near Baker.

On Friday, light rain, wind and thunderstorms moved across the desert and mountains, with snow falling across the higher elevations and hail in the lower areas, the National Weather Service reported.

There were reports of 2-inch-sized hail falling around the Line Fire area, according to Cal Fire and Big Bear-based Meteorologist Ben Brissey.

Some minor flooding was also seen in the Highland area, where Line Fire was allegedly ignited in an act of arson.

Additional showers and thunderstorms are likely through Friday night as low pressure exits the region.

Fair and much warmer weather is expected this weekend into next week with dry weather expected, the National Weather Service reported.

On Saturday and Sunday, high temperatures in the Victor Valley should be in the 80s, while temps in the 90s are expected Monday through Thursday.

    SR-127 flooded again

The storm brought rain and heavy flooding in the area of State Route 127 near Baker.

The roadway was temporarily closed until conditions improved and the roadway was cleared, between Baker and Ibex Pass, Caltrans reported.

On Friday night, SR-127 north of Baker had been fully re-opened. Those traveling through this area should be cautious due to wet roadway conditions and possible objects near the roadway, the California Highway Patrol reported.

In September of 2023, SR-127 in San Bernardino and Inyo counties was closed until emergency repairs were completed on the highway.

The road was temporarily shuttered between the town of Baker and Tecopa Hot Springs Road due to heavy monsoon storm flooding that severely damaged several sections of the highway, Caltrans reported.

The $28.1 million emergency work project on SR-127 included roadbed repair, the backfilling of shoulders, installing armor erosion embankments, repairing drainage areas, removing debris, and other structural damage repairs.

In December, the route was reopened with limited flagging operations and the piloting of direct traffic in both directions.

SR-127 was fully opened in February as crews continued to conduct road repairs.
