Red Sox star likely shut down for the rest of the season

The Boston Red Sox have been playing some really bad baseball over the last month or so to the point that they're essentially out of the American League Wild Card race with eight games to go in their regular season.

With that knowledge, Boston may be losing one of their stars for the final few contests, as Red Sox manager Alex Cora informed the media on Friday night that third baseman Rafael Devers will have an MRI on Saturday.

"No, he's not (OK)," Cora said. "You saw him throwing today (the shoulder) was bothering him. When he hit inside, he felt it. He's gonna get an MRI tomorrow. We'll see where we're at. Probably, this is it for him."

Devers has been dealing with the shoulder injury all season and has missed games at times, but it's really impacted him recently.

In his last 37 games, Devers is hitting just .187 with a .587 OPS, six doubles and three home runs. That's coincidentally around the same time that the team fell apart.

The rest of this season doesn't matter, so this is a good opportunity for Devers to take some time and evaluate where he stands healthwise. Hopefully, he'll be good to go for 2025.
