LinkedIn Training Artificial Intelligence Using Your Articles Without Permission

The social media platform LinkedIn has now been using user-generated content, which includes articles and posts, to train its generative artificial intelligence models without gaining consent from users.

LinkedIn updated its FAQ section and privacy policy to reflect the practice, and indicated that data collection for artificial intelligence training had already started before their announcement.

Users have the ability to opt out of having the data utilized for artificial intelligence training by going to a setting referred to as “Data for Generative AI Improvement” underneath “Data Privacy” within the settings.

The platform’s generative AI models are utilized for features such as writing assistants, and their scraped data is set to be used to train those models. LinkedIn states that they use privacy-enhancing technologies in order to redact or anonymise personal information from their AI training sets.

The move by the platform raises concerns about privacy, especially given a lack of transparency, as well as user autonomy. Their new privacy policy states that they might use personal information to create AI-driven insights and services. But, users ought to be uncomfortable with the possible misuse of their information, especially taking into consideration concerns about privacy in the digital world.

Notably, LinkedIn users who live in the EU (European Union), Switzerland, or EEA (European Economic Area) are exempt from the practice of data harvesting because of more stringent data protection rules in these areas. Users who live outside those areas have to manually opt-out in order to prevent more use of their information.

As aforementioned, in order to prevent more use of your information for AI training, just head to the account settings, and push “Data Privacy” then toggle off the option “Data for Generative AI Improvement.” Just keep in mind that it won’t reverse the use of data already processed for artificial intelligence training purposes.
