RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Richmond-based nonprofit Sports Backers has announced that its founding Executive Director, John Lugbill, will be retiring on June 30, 2025.

According to a release from the organization on Friday, Sept. 20, Lugbill will retire after 31 years of service.

“Our achievements over the past three decades are a testament to the incredible teamwork at Sports Backers,” Lugbill said. “I’m so grateful that I’ve had the opportunity to work with so many amazing people and to make active living a part of our region’s DNA.”

During Lugbill’s tenure, the organization has grown significantly and received multiple awards and accolades. He was even recognized for his contributions with Leadership Metro Richmond’s 2024 Ukrop’s Community Vision Award.

“Jon brings an energy to Sports Backers that emanates through the staff, Board of Directors, volunteers, and everyone who engages with our events and programs,” said Sports Backers Board Chair Roy Grier. “Jon’s legacy is not tied to a specific event, program, or trail, but rather to the culture of excellence he has instilled in the organization—along with a sense of fun and impact that keeps everyone engaged and active.”

Lugbill said he felt the timing was right for him to retire, as Sports Backers prepares to move its headquarters in early 2025.

“The Sports Backers Board of Directors has already established a search committee to oversee the transition process,” Friday’s release reads. “The committee has engaged the firm Warren Whitney to assist with succession planning and manage the search. Their focus is on selecting a new Executive Director who will advance the organization’s mission and build on Jon’s remarkable legacy. The search for Jon’s successor will commence in January, and the Board of Directors is committed to ensuring a seamless transition. Further updates on the search process will be shared in the coming months.”
