You’ve left the workforce and finally have time on your hands, so the remaining barrier is just the financial part. Fortunately, there are a number of international travel packages that offer discounts designed for seniors. This means that retirees on a fixed income can have the new opportunities they’ve been hoping for, or simply have the option to return to their favorite locations.
AAA’s Trip Canvas offers senior citizen packages, which are a good idea for seniors interested in guided touring. You get the added assurance of special care to address any specific needs, helping you to make the most of your trip.
AARP is also integrated with Expedia through the AARP Travel Center . If you’re a member, you can get access to exclusive deals and packages. You can also use Travel Center to get hundreds of savings on flight + hotel bundles or cruises (Europe, South Pacific, etc).
Grand European Travel
Grand European Travel (GET) offers over 300 guided vacations and river cruises to destinations like Italy, France, Australia and more. AARP Members can save $100 on select tours, though there is currently a double ($200) discount for first time travelers.
Metrojourneys
Metrojourneys features a number of all-inclusive packages to top destinations like the Galapagos Islands, Kyoto and Vienna. These various trips are customizable, and some offer ways for seniors to save money. Vienna, for instance, provides senior discounts to operas and concerts.
AARP Members
AARP members are rewarded with numerous benefits, from groceries and leisure activities to hotels and rental cars, as detailed by SeniorLiving.org . Best Western Hotels & Resorts offers between 5% and 15% for AARP members at more than 4,000 hotels worldwide, while Wyndham Hotels offers 10%.
Even if you’re not an AARP member, many travel companies offer discounts based on age alone. Amtrak will allow those aged 65 and older to save 10% on many rail fares. Marriott has a senior discount rate for people aged 62 and older. In many cases where there isn’t a complete package available for a discount, you can still save by optimizing the individual elements of your trip. You’ll combine a hotel, flight, car rental (if necessary) and any other accommodations separately, receiving the discounts through each individual establishment.
Loyalty Programs
Travel sites that don’t offer senior discounts still have ways to save money on travel:
Booking.com’s loyalty program , Genius, is free to sign up for and is a good idea for seniors and families who plan to vacation more in the future. The discounts you unlock are “yours to keep forever.” The discounts increase at higher tiers – along the way, you’ll gain access to savings on rental cars, complimentary breakfasts, free room upgrades, and even priority support. This site also offers various deals under different titles, like Late Escape and Getaway Deals – the latter is structured around providing you with a minimum discount of 15%.
Expedia also has a free travel rewards program, OneKey , which you can use to save 10% or more on over 100,000 hotels worldwide, plus up to 30% for bundling a hotel with the flight. Even if you’re not planning too many trips, you can save by signing up for free. Travelocity , which is owned by Expedia, doesn’t directly offer senior discounts but they do feature flight and hotel deals for under $400. There are also other opportunities to save, like the Holiday travel sale, for 25% or more on select hotels.
Priceline is another option that allows you to save when you bundle your accommodations together. While they offer flight and hotel savings, you can also add car rental to your bundle. Some featured deals will provide substantially greater savings for booking entire trips.
