    Ingredients

    For the bottom layer:

    • ¼ cup salted butter, browned
    • 2 cups mini marshmallows
    • 2 cups crispy rice cereal

    For the spiced top layer:

    • ⅓ cup salted butter
    • 3 cups mini marshmallows
    • A few drops of orange food coloring (optional)
    • 1 teaspoon pumpkin spice mix, plus extra for garnish
    • 4 cups crispy rice cereal
    • Whipped cream (for serving)

    Instructions

    1. Grease a 9x9-inch baking dish and set it aside.
    2. For the bottom layer, brown the butter in a medium-sized pan over medium heat until it turns golden and fragrant. Stir in the marshmallows and continue stirring until fully melted. Remove from heat, fold in the crispy cereal, and press the mixture evenly into the greased dish. Let it cool.
    3. In the same pan, melt the remaining butter for the top layer. Once melted, stir in the pumpkin spice mix and food coloring, if using. Add the marshmallows and stir until smooth. Fold in the crispy rice cereal and spread this mixture over the cooled bottom layer. Pat it down evenly.
    4. Let the layers set for at least an hour before cutting into 16 squares. Top each square with whipped cream and a sprinkle of extra pumpkin spice or cinnamon for added flair.

    Substitutions

    • Swap out salted butter for unsalted and add a pinch of salt for a more controlled taste.
    • Use vegan butter and dairy-free marshmallows to make these squares fully dairy-free.
    • No pumpkin spice? Make your own mix with cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves.

    Storage

    Store these Pumpkin Spice Krispie Squares in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days. You can also freeze them for longer storage — simply wrap each square in plastic wrap and place them in a freezer-safe container. Let them thaw at room temperature when you're ready to enjoy.
