Highlights, key plays and photos from No. 12 Utah’s 22-19 win over No. 14 Oklahoma State

Utah 22, Oklahoma State 19

Utah’s Big 12 conference opener was vintage Utes football — out-physical, out-tough the opposition, even if the game’s final few minutes were interesting.

Utah’s defense shut down the Oklahoma State offense for nearly the entire day and true freshman quarterback Isaac Wilson, filling in again for Cam Rising, showed poise and leadership in his second straight start as Utah beat the Cowboys in a matchup of two top 15 teams.

How dominant was the Utah defense? OSU seventh year senior quarterback Alan Bowman completed just 8 of 22 passes for 89 yards and an interception in the first half and was benched at halftime, though he returned in the fourth quarter after his replacement, Garret Rangel, failed to manufacture any offense.

The Cowboys, which put up 285 yards of total offense, scored two touchdowns and a pair of two-point conversions after Utah went up 22-3 with 6:21 to play, making the ending tighter after Oklahoma State sputtered offensively much of the day.

The Utes were able to recover an onside kick with 1:47 to play, though, then ran out the clock to escape.

Wilson, meanwhile, completed 17 of 29 passes for 207 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions — both were exceptional plays by the defender — while Micah Bernard ran for a career-high 182 yards and Dorian Singer added 95 receiving yards on seven catches.

The Utes finished with 456 yards of total offense and converted 4 of 5 fourth downs. Utah dominated time of possession, holding onto the ball for more than 42 minutes.

Fourth quarter

Utah 22, Oklahoma State 19

1:47 — Oklahoma State has made this a one-score game again — driving 69 yards in seven plays for their second straight touchdown drive.

This time, Rashod Owens caught a 9-yard pass from Alan Bowman, and the Cowboys converted a 2-point attempt to make it a three-point game. Utah 22, Oklahoma State 19 .

5:37 — Oklahoma State — finally — responded, and the Cowboys did it quickly.

Alan Bowman hit Brennan Presley for a 28-yard touchdown pass, capping a three-play, 58-yard scoring drive that only took 36 seconds off the clock. Oklahoma State also converted a 2-point attempt. Utah 22, Oklahoma State 11 .

6:21 — The Utes sealed the win, turning an Oklahoma State turnover into a quick touchdown.

Elijah Davis intercepted an Alan Bowman long pass downfield, then on the first play following that, Isaac Wilson hit Brant Kuithe for a 45-yard touchdown pass. Utah 22, Oklahoma State 3 . The Utes went for 2, but it was unsuccessful.

11:29 — Utah tacked on another field goal, this one a 44-yarder from Cole Becker, to make it a 13-point game. Utah 16, Oklahoma State 3 .

Micah Bernard and Isaac Wilson both ripped off critical runs on the drive, including Wilson’s 5-yarder to convert a fourth and 2 that got the Utes in field goal range.

Third quarter

Utah 13, Oklahoma State 3

2:39 — Cole Becker got some redemption, making a 38-yard field goal just minutes after missing from 36. Utah 13, Oklahoma State 3 .

The score was set up by a blistering 62-yard run from Micah Bernard, as the Utah running back brought through several tackle attempts before moving the ball to the Oklahoma State 27.

8:15 — Cole Becker missed a 36-yard field goal that would have given Utah a double-digit lead, pulling it left.

That came after an impressive 48-yard run by Isaac Wilson, as the true freshman got the Utes into scoring position by finding a seam on third-and-11 and showing off his wheels.

13:25 — Oklahoma State made a change at quarterback to start the second half.

Out is seventh year senior Alan Bowman, who struggled mightily in the first half.

In is redshirt sophomore Garret Rangel, though OSU went three and out in his first series.

Halftime

Utah 10, Oklahoma State 3

The Utes defense has shown up today — Utah held Oklahoma State to 119 total yards in the first half. Seventh year senior quarterback Alan Bowman has completed just 8 of 22 for 89 yards and an interception.

Isaac Wilson, meanwhile, has looked more poised and completed 11 of 17 passes for 132 yards. Both of his interceptions came on exceptional plays by Trey Rucker.

Utah also converted 3 of 4 fourth downs in the first half, showing trust in their true freshman signal caller, as the Utes have 203 yards of total offense at the break.

Second quarter

Utah 10, Oklahoma State 3

0:20 — There have been three turnovers in the final minute of the first half.

First, Micah Bernard lost a fumble on a screen pass, then Alan Bowman threw an interception on third down to Alaka’i Gilman, then Isaac Wilson was picked going deep by a sliding interception by Trey Rucker, his second INT of the game.

That is three turnovers in six plays.

5:32 — Oklahoma State finally got a promising drive going, but Logan Ward missed a 46-yard field goal, and the Utes stay up seven.

7:25 — What an impressive drive.

The Utes marched 64 yards in 11 plays — nine runs and two passes — and took the lead on a Brant Kuithe touchdown run, where the tight end lined up in a wildcat QB formation and faked the handoff to another player coming across the formation. Utah 10, Oklahoma State 3 .

The Utes converted another fourth down, and this one came from the freshman — Isaac Wilson rolled out and, with the Cowboys in good coverage, made a bee-line for the first-down marker. He outmuscled an Oklahoma State defender and picked up the necessary 4 yards to pick up the first down at the Cowboys 20.

That set up the touchdown three plays later.

Money Parks also had a 20-yard catch early in the drive to get Utah into Oklahoma State territory.

14:56 — Cole Becker tied the game with a 43-yard field goal after an entertaining, effective 62-yard drive from the Utes. Utah 3, Oklahoma State 3 .

Utah converted a fourth and 3 at the Oklahoma State 32 on the drive, with Money Parks in motion and Wilson hitting him for a 11-yard gain.

That came one play after Dorian Singer made an insane catch — pinning the pass on his helmet and holding on as he fell to the ground. It was initially ruled an incompletion but changed on review, and set the Utes up for the chance to go for a fourth and short.

The Cowboys sacked Isaac Wilson sacked twice — sandwiched around another catch and excellent effort to fight for more yards by Singer — after the fourth-down conversion, setting up the Becker field goal.

First quarter

Oklahoma State 3, Utah 0

7:40 — Utah’s second possession came to an abrupt halt when Isaac Wilson tried going long to Dijon Stanley on the wheel route — a play that the Utes were successful at in the opener against Southern Utah — but Oklahoma State safety Trey Rucker made an excellent break on the ball and came up with the interception at the Oklahoma State 41.

The Utes defense came up big after the turnover, forcing a three and out.

8:43 — Oklahoma State got on the board first.

The Cowboys drove 62 yards in 10 plays — using a solid mix of pass and run calls — before stalling at the Utah 6.

Logan Ward ended the drive with a chip shot 23-yard field goal. Oklahoma State 3, Utah 0 .

12:14 — Utah was unsuccessful on a fourth-and-2 play at the Oklahoma State 32. Isaac Wilson rolled out and threw toward Brant Kuithe, but the Cowboys had the play well-covered and the pass was deflected away by Lyrik Rawls.

13:02 — Brant Kuithe stayed down on the field following a second-down play where Isaac Wilson threw inside the 10 to the tight end.

Kuithe appeared to come down hard on his right shoulder as he leapt unsuccessfully for the pass.

Fortunately for the Utes, he was able to jog off after being attended to.

14:26 — Isaac Wilson came out onto the field to lead the Utah offense, not Cam Rising, who was designated a “game-time decision” going into the day.

Utah started its first drive at its own 49 after Oklahoma State went three and out to start the game.
