Rain chances diminish tonight; better rain chances on the way next week

    By Matt Cassada,

Saturday evening, at least early on, starts with the chance for a hit or miss shower/storm. The best chances will be across our eastern mountains in Nicholas, Greenbrier, and Pocahontas counties. Rain chances will subside tonight, leading to a partly cloudy overnight, with the chance for some fog, as temps drop near 60.

Sunday starts off a little muggy but nothing too concerning as you make your way to church. Our passing cold front backs off Sunday, giving us the chance to enjoy some partly sunny skies as temps push into the middle 80s. As our next system approaches Sunday night, expect the clouds to thicken and a stray shower out to the west is possible.

Monday brings in a low pressure system across the Ohio River Valley. Scattered showers look like a good bet in the morning, so kids don’t forget the umbrellas. We look to catch a few breaks towards lunchtime as temps rise into just the 70s. Scattered showers, and a few rumbles of thunder, again look possible as we get into the afternoon.

Tuesday continues the rain chances with an approaching cold front out in Kentucky. A warm front lifts early, bringing in morning rain showers and as our cold front slowly gets closer, afternoon scattered showers will be possible. With fall leaves on the ground, watch for clogged drain systems and ponding on the roads to and from work.

Wednesday once again keeps the chance for some showers around as our cold front slowly crosses. Isolated to scattered in nature, a few heavy downpours will occasionally create a headache if you’re hitting the road. Cloudy skies make for a gloomy look but at least temps will stay on the cool side in the 70s.

Thursday begins a slow clearing process as our cold front departs and high pressure tries to regain control. We’ll start off mostly cloudy during the morning, but sunshine does return from west to east throughout the day. A few more rain chances as our previous system leaves, but best chances will be held across the eastern mountains.

Friday brings back mostly sunny skies as high pressure builds in up to our north. A chilly start in the morning with temps in the 50s so you might want a light jacket. Thankfully, you won’t need it all day as temps rise into the 70s later in the afternoon. As temps drop into the 60s that evening, should be good to enjoy some high school football!

Saturday will see a mix of sun and clouds, with more cloud cover expected further south you live. A bit more of that sunny skies will go a little to helping with temps as they rise into the upper 70s.

In your extended forecast, we’re in peak hurricane months for the Atlantic season. While we currently don’t have systems right now, we are watching the potential for a system forming up along the gulf. Still unsure what’s impacts will be, but we’ll keep you posted!
