Marshall coach Charles Huff compares Ohio State to 2019 LSU, 2020 Alabama title teams

Before Marshall played Ohio State, Thundering Herd coach Charles Huff said the 2024 Buckeyes were one of the best teams he had ever seen on film.

And after he saw them in person in a 49-14 rout at Ohio Stadium, does he still consider them the best?

    "Ever," he said. "Ever."

In fact, Huff compared OSU to the 2019 LSU and 2020 Alabama national championship teams, both known for their prolific offenses.

"They're probably in that realm," he said.

    His players agreed.

"Ohio State, they're one of those types of teams where if you slip up and make one little mental mistake, physical mistake or even something like a footwork mistake, you're going to get highlighted," Marshall defensive lineman Mike Green said. "They've got them guys who can stick their foot into the ground and go, and then they've also got those guys who can run down the field and catch. They're just a great football team."

Green was especially complimentary of Ohio State running backs Quinshon Judkins (14 carries, 173 yards, two touchdowns) and TreVeyon Henderson (six carries, 76 yards, two touchdowns), and he noted that he believes OSU freshman receiver Jeremiah Smith "might even be an All-American by the end of this year." Smith had a relatively quiet day with three catches for 70 yards, but one of his receptions went 53 yards for a score.

"And then defensively, they smother you," Huff said. "They kind of lean on you and weigh you down a little bit."

He described the Ohio State defensive line as having "eight or nine of those guys (who) will play in the NFL." He noted that Marshall was the first team to score a touchdown against the Buckeyes this season.

"Everything," quarterback Stone Earle said when asked what stood out about the Buckeyes defense. "I mean, their d-line, their back end, their linebackers."

Huff jokingly said this week that he wouldn't mind if some of those players transferred to the Thundering Herd this offseason and noted the team has an NIL deal with Tudor's Biscuits.

"Actually, one of the (Ohio State) players on the way off asked, 'You got any biscuits?' " said Huff.

He didn't have any biscuits, but he had plenty of praise.

"If they can stay healthy," he mused about Ohio State's potential before trailing off. "Actually, I don't even know if they need to stay healthy. They can probably just put their fifth guy in."
