Kirk Herbstreit called out the Oklahoma Sooners for being “unethical as hell” Saturday night after a player left the field with a possible injury.

The Tennessee Volunteers had just picked up a first and goal in the first quarter on a 38-yard pass from quarterback Nico Iamaleava to Bru McCoy.

Before the up-tempo Vols offense could run another play, Sooners defensive tackle Da’Jon Terry went down with an apparent injury. He was helped off the field by a couple of athletic staffers.

Fans have seen this situation play out countless times. A team makes a big play and gets ready for another. The defense is winded and a defender suddenly goes down with an “injury” to stop the action.

The problem is, sometimes it’s not an “injury,” but a real injury, so it’s usually best to tread lightly in these situations. But as ABC rolled a replay of Terry appearing to glance at the Sooners sideline before going down, Herbstreit immediately took the “injury” angle.

“This is college football. It drives me crazy,” Herbstreit said. “They look over after a big play and all of a sudden, he looks over and he just goes down. It’s not necessarily against the rules but it’s unethical as hell, when you see this all over against these tempo offenses, guys just go down with the quote-unquote injury.”

“Preach, Brother Herbstreit,” play-by-play announcer Chris Fowler joked.

“I just think it’s pathetic,” Herbstreit said.

As for an update on Terry, he returned, much to the amazement of many fans.

Kirk was being an ass … maybe it happened that way, maybe not (none of us were on the field) … not to mention, Tennessee could do no wrong according to Kirk, worst announcing job I have ever seen from him

when this happens, the players should have to stay out for the entire rest of the qtr or series.
