ST. LOUIS – A special ceremony Saturday at Jefferson Barracks Park was held to remember those who served in the Battle of the Bulge , one of the most consequential battles of World War II.

The ceremony consisted of a memorial service and the laying of wreaths. The Battle of the Bulge is nearing its 80th anniversary.

Five veterans who fought in Luxembourg and Belgium during the battle were on hand. The oldest of those veterans was 102 years old, while the youngest was 99.

They joined other World War II veterans as their families and community paid tribute to service members who gave their lives during the campaign.

Among those paying tribute were Missouri U.S. Congresswoman Ann Wagener, who previously served as a U.S. ambassador to one of the countries that were liberated by allied forces.

The Battle of the Bulge began on Dec. 16, 1944 and ended on Jan. 25, 1945 as a result of victory by allied forces.
