WRIC 8 News reported that young entrepreneurs showcased their small businesses at Dorey Park Farmers Market on Saturday, September 21 during a special Children’s Entrepreneur Market.

    About the program

Over 40 kids participated in the event. Some were as young as five years old. They set up shop and ran their businesses for the day.

This event is part of a national program that has taught over 10,000 children the fundamentals of entrepreneurship and leadership.

    Manager Jeni Mauney said:

“This is a great opportunity in a low-risk environment to have some real-life learning.”

The program started in Utah in 2017. There are now markets in 24 states. Saturday was the first event in Virginia.

    Mauney said:

“They’re getting character development, they’re getting just skills for life as they learn about financial literacy and think about what they want to sell. They’re talking to customers, looking an adult in the face.”

The parents of the young entrepreneurs were equally enthusiastic about their kids' experiences.

    Parent Lindy Dorfman said:

“This is not like your typical setup lemonade stand in your driveway. It is an opportunity at a very young age to run a real business. I think it’s invaluable.”

According to a Facebook post, there will be another Children's Entrepreneur Market - Virginia on October 19, 2024 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Historic Manassas Farmers Market at 9431 West Street, Manassas, VA 20110.
