Pleasanton, CA – Southbound drivers on Interstate 680 are facing significant traffic disruptions this weekend due to a full closure of the highway between Alcosta Boulevard in San Ramon and the I-580/I-680 connector in Pleasanton.

The closure, which began at 9 p.m. on Friday, September 20, will continue until 4 a.m. on Monday, September 23.

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is conducting critical road paving as part of a larger effort to repair deteriorating pavement along the stretch.

Caltrans officials say this work will reduce the need for around 40 nightly closures in the future.

Try telling that to the drivers heading to San Jose or down to LA who are suddenly stuck in an extra hour-long traffic jam, though!

During the closure, all southbound traffic is being diverted, and drivers are urged to use alternative routes such as I-880 or detours through I-580 and SR-24.

Motorists from Danville and Walnut Creek are advised to expect delays and heavy congestion, especially in San Ramon. I drove through San Ramon yesterday and tons of people were getting off 680 to avoid to detour, which meant way more cars than usual on surface roads in SR.

While the southbound lanes are fully closed, northbound lanes remain open, and the I-580/I-680 interchange is still accessible. This closure is part of a series, with two more partial closures scheduled for October 4-7 and October 18-21.

Caltrans has placed message signs to keep drivers informed, and California Highway Patrol officers are stationed to assist with detours.

What I love are the spontaneous nightly closures of the ramps. No warning or, if there is a warning, they close 20 minutes early. Rogue construction with no accountability. Some people work nights and would like to know.
