(This story has been updated with new information.)

Northbound Highway 101 was closed overnight in Camarillo starting early Sunday after a crash during a law enforcement pursuit.

The rollover crash, reported at 12:05 a.m., caused major injuries, according to the California Highway Patrol, and shut northbound lanes in the vicinity of Carmen Drive.

Two 17-year-old males were in the vehicle, according to the Ventura County Sheriff's Office, which launched the pursuit.

The driver was thrown from the vehicle. The passenger was trapped inside, according to CHP accounts.

The teens, both said to be Ventura County residents, were taken to the hospital. The driver, who was reported in serious condition, was taken to Children's Hospital Los Angeles. His passenger, who was in stable condition, was taken to Ventura County Medical Center where he was under observation for minor injuries.

Northbound lanes remained closed almost until daybreak for investigation and cleanup. Motorists were detoured on surface streets.

The closures were lifted by 6:30 a.m.

Sheriff's Capt. Ken Truitt said the incident began around midnight when a patrol sergeant spotted a vehicle that matched the description in an earlier theft at CVS. The vehicle was near Barry Street and Peoples Avenue, west of Lewis Road.

The sergeant attempted a traffic stop, but as he walked up to the vehicle, believed to be a Toyota 4Runner SUV, the driver took off, Truitt said.

A "very short" pursuit followed, the captain said.

The Toyota entered the northbound freeway near Lewis Road.

While the Toyota was being pursued, the driver appeared to make a hard left-hand maneuver and the SUV rolled, Truitt said.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
