Janet Jackson told a reporter during an interview that was published on Saturday that Vice President Kamala Harris is “not Black” and also predicted post-election “mayhem.”

The 58-year-old pop diva sat down with Nosheen Iqbal of The Guardian to discuss various topics, including her career, her late brother Michael, and the upcoming 2024 election. During one moment of the interview, Iqbal reported that Jackson declared Harris — who has Black and Indian roots — did not meet the bar for what counts as being an African American. Iqbal wrote of the discussion:

I wonder where she stands on the forthcoming election. After all, I say, America could be on the verge of voting in its first black female president, Kamala Harris.

“Well, you know what they supposedly said?” she asks me. “She’s not black. That’s what I heard. That she’s Indian.”

She looks at me expectantly, perhaps assuming that I have Indian heritage.

    “Well, she’s both,” I offer.

“Her father’s white. That’s what I was told. I mean, I haven’t watched the news in a few days,” she coughs. “I was told that they discovered her father was white.”

Iqbal told her readers Jackson’s comments “floored” her and wrote it is “well known that Harris’s father is a Jamaican economist, a Stanford professor who split from her Indian mother when she was five.”

The reporter went on to note Harris has embraced being Black since her childhood.

“The people who are most vocal in questioning the facts of Harris’s identity tend to be hardcore QAnon-adjacent, Trump-loving conspiracy theorists,” Iqbal wrote. “I don’t think Jackson falls into that camp, but I do wonder what the algorithms are serving her. I start again. Harris has dual heritage, I say, and, given this moment, does Jackson think America is ready for her – if we agree she’s black? Or, OK, a woman of colour?”

As to Harris’s ethnicity and whether Americans were ready for a Black female leading the country, Jackson replied, “I don’t know. Honestly, I don’t want to answer that because I really, truthfully, don’t know. I think either way it goes is going to be mayhem.”

Asked if she believed there would be a “peaceful transition of power” in January, Jackson said, “I think there might be mayhem. Either way it goes, but we’ll have to see.”

In July, former President Donald Trump argued while meeting with Black journalists in Chicago that Harris suddenly became Black one day.

“She was always of Indian heritage, and she was only promoting Indian heritage,” he said on July 31. “I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago, when she happened to turn Black, and now she wants to be known as Black. So I don’t know, is she Indian or is she Black?”
