DOVER — Delaware State’s football team did some good things against Richmond on Saturday night.

But it wasn’t nearly enough to keep pace with the Spiders.

The Hornets held an early 10-point lead before Richmond pulled away to a 38-24 victory in a non-conference FCS matchup at Alumni Stadium.

Richmond (2-2) scored on three plays of at least 59 yards as they tallied 38 points for the second year in a row in beating DelState (1-3).

Even a huge offensive showing by quarterback Marqui Adams — who both threw and ran for over 100 yards — wasn’t enough to keep the Hornets from losing their second straight game.

The Spiders put up 529 yards of offense as quarterback Cam Coleman completed 18-of-33 passes for 312 yards with two touchdowns and a pair of interceptions. Richmond running back Zach Palmer-Smith finished with 207 yards and a TD on 32 carries.

DSU, which lost to the Spiders 38-3 a year ago, did collect 375 yards in the contest.Adams was 13-of-18 for 183 yards with two touchdowns passing while also running 14 times for 114 yards.

A seven-yard touchdown run by E.J. Core and a 27-yard field goal from Nathan Wilson staked the Hornets to their 10-0 lead in the second quarter. But Richmond went ahead 14-10 by halftime and never trailed again.

The Spiders kept the Hornets at arm’s length as the two squads traded touchdowns in the second half.

    EXTRA POINTS

Jaden Sutton ran for 71 yards on 18 carries. .. Kyree Benton caught a 48-yard scoring pass from Adams in the fourth quarter. ... Wayne Favors III and Barry Wagner each had an interception for the Hornets.... DSU held a seven-minute edge in time of possession.
