BEDFORD PARK, The Bronx (PIX11) — Emergency crews evacuated multiple people in a Bronx neighborhood because of a ruptured gas main on Sunday morning, a representative for the fire department said.

Fumes and the odor of gas covered the area near 379 Bedford Park Boulevard in the Bronx around 9:40 a.m., fire officials say.

Dozens of emergency personnel and crews from Con Edison responded to the scene to investigate. Police also warned against travel in the area.

“Due to a gas leak, please avoid the area around Bedford Park Blvd & Webster Ave in The Bronx. There is an NYPD and Con Edison presence. Traffic delays are expected in the surrounding area,” a representative for the agency posted on social media .

A representative for Con Edison says 21 customers are without gas service due to the rupture but the company is working to restore that service by the end of Sunday.

The cause of the gas main rupture is still under investigation but no injuries have been reported.

It was an awful experience on Sunday my building shook like we were having another earthquake and we were evacuated. The sound was so loud it was unbearable where you could not hear your own self talking. There was liquid, debris and so much dust from the ground it look like a water fountain. Bedford Park, Decatur, 201 Street & Webster Avenue(s) were all blocked off traffic in deadlock and rerouted. Con Ed Emergency was still on scene overnight stated everything was under control however they would be out overnight as precautions tables set-up with donuts and coffee

I knew it was eventually going to happen, that corner has been under construction for 8 years on and off and there's a diner on the corner that I go and it's just so sad. the underground city engineers and surveyors are taking to many coffee breaks, there's a children's learning academy close to the incident and my granddaughter started at 3 she's now 11 so go figure the crappie work all these contractors have done in 11 years 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
