ANDERSON, S.C. (WSPA) – Anderson School District 1 broke ground on what will eventually become its fifteenth school.

When it opens in Fall 2026, Oak Hill Elementary School will take in students from nearby Powdersville Elementary School and Concrete Primary.

District Superintendent Keith Young explained overcrowding at the schools prompted the district to look at how to best address the problem.

“It’ll help relieve some of the traffic in Powdersville where some of those schools are located and just serve this area of the district where we haven’t had an Elementary school,” said Young.

Brenna Horn, Powdersville Elementary School Principal told 7NEWS students currently use several portable classrooms because the school is so full.

“We are busting out the seams and starting to add some portables on to make sure we’re able to have the space for all of our learners so we’re definitely ready for a new school,” said Horn. “Our students are very excited.”

The new $44 million dollar school will feature a conference room for staff, a full-sized gymnasium for students and be a K-5 school.

Young told 7NEWS he expects details about the transfer and realignment process to be released to affected families by the end of the current school year.

Powdersville Elementary contains students in third, fourth and fifth grades; Concrete Primary contains students in Kindgarten, first and second grades.

It’s a move that Melissa Tollison, the parent of a current Powdersville Elementary School student supports.

“It’s a growing community and that’s why it’s needed,” said Tollison.
