Phoenix police arrested a man who turned himself in on Sunday morning after police say he admitted to being the driver who fled on foot from the scene of a fatal hit-and-run on Saturday.

Department spokesperson Sgt. Robert Scherer said officers arrested and interviewed 24-year-old Travis Smith before he was taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries he suffered from the collision. He was later medically cleared and booked into jail on multiple counts, including manslaughter and fleeing the scene of a collision involving an injury or fatality.

Scherer said police had responded to the area of 16th Street and Camelback Road at around 12:33 a.m. where they found a man, later identified as 29-year-old Dillon Mares with serious injuries. Fire personnel attempted life-saving measures on Mares, but later pronounced him deceased at the scene.

Scherer said preliminary information suggested Smith ran a red light while traveling south on 16th Street before striking Mares' vehicle, which was traveling west on Camelback Road. Scherer added that Smith's vehicle remained at the scene, but Smith admitted to fleeing before officers arrived.

It was not immediately clear when Smith's next court appearance would be.
