NEWINGTON, Conn. (WTNH) — Two Newington High School freshmen rallied their community Sunday to help the family of Regan Martins after her sudden death.

A large crowd gathered at the Newington High football field Sunday morning for the two mile run/walk. Every runner donated $5 to participate and donned a shirt in Regan’s favorite color, pink.

The run was organized by 9th graders Maya LeCuivre and Gianna Galante. Galante knew that she would do something to help the Martins family as soon as she heard of Regan’s passing.

‘You have a gold heart. We will miss you forever:’ Family remembers 12-year-old Regan Martins as kind, loving

“They’re such an important family to the town with all the kids because they’re involved in so many different things,” Galante told News 8.

Regan unexpectedly passed away hours after an unexplained stomach ache in August. An autopsy is being done to determine the 12-year-old’s cause of death.

Since her passing, the Town of Newington has been fighting to keep Regan’s memory alive. The town was adorned with pink lights in her honor and friends of Regan opened a lemonade stand to help the family.

“I’m so happy that me and Gianna started this, because it’s just incredible to see everyone come together,” said  LeCuivre. “It’s not just Newington, it’s a bunch of other towns too.  It’s been so amazing to see everyone. Everyone here is in pink.”

All of the proceeds from Sunday’s run will go to the Martins family.
