GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A walk held in Grand Rapids Sunday aimed to bring awareness during National Ovarian Cancer Month.

The 12th annual Michigan Ovarian Cancer Alliance one-mile walk/run was held at Millennium Park. Called the “Shake Your Teal Feathers: Sundae Stroll,” the event culminated with a sundae bar at the finish line.

The walk raised money for ovarian cancer awareness and research.

There was also a game area and a silent auction to help bring more visibility to ovarian cancer and its impact on the community.

“Having this awareness out, because there is no diagnostic test, getting women to realize the symptoms which we say there are four cardinal symptoms: feeling of fullness, bloating, abdominal pain discomfort and changes in urination … It’s powerful for those who have lost somebody to the disease, but it’s also powerful to get the message out to the community,” said Pam Dahlmann, co-founder of MIOCA.

The organization said awareness events like this also work to ensure people understand the importance of knowing their genetic family history.
