    BARTON ROUNDUP: Bulldogs blank Erskine for 4-0 start

    Barton College’s men’s soccer team won its fourth straight match to start the season with a 3-0 shutout of Erskine College in an NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas match Saturday, Sept. 14, at Truist Stadium.

    The Bulldogs, now 2-0 in conference matches, got the winning goal in the 18th minute when sophomore forward Andrew Herman sent a ball into the net after a pass into the box from senior midfielder Gabriel Slemer Lopes.

    Junior forward Blake Grove scored the next two goals for Barton while Slemer Lopes added another assist on Grove’s first goal that came off Slemer Lopes’ header with 22 seconds left in the half. Sophomore midfielder Dan Ivanov also got credit for the assist on the goal.

    Another double assist came on Grove’s second goal in the 81st minute. Senior defender Jeremy Alvarez, a Greenfield School product, delivered a corner kick that sophomore defender Kai Thurston received and passed to Grove for the goal.

    Barton posted 25 shots with seven on frame to just two by the Fleet (1-4, 1-3 CC) and none on frame, leaving BC goalkeeper Steingrimur Gunnarsson with an unchallenged shutout.

    The Bulldogs continue conference play Wednesday at Francis Marion.

    BC gets another shutout

    Barton recorded its fifth straight shutout with a 3-0 home win over Erskine on Saturday at Truist Stadium in the Conference Carolinas debut for the Bulldogs, now 4-1-1 overall.

    Barton, which hasn’t allowed a goal since a season-opening 3-1 loss at Wingate, got first-half goals from freshman defender Taylor Esposito and senior forward Anna Fretwell while grad student forward Lexis Goldberg buried her team-best fifth goal of the season in the second half.

    Goalkeeper Taylor Primack only needed one save to record her fifth straight shutout and extend her scoreless streak to 450 minutes, 45 seconds.

    Gianna Ferigne and Iris Gissuradottir were each credited with an assist on Esposito’s 18th-minute goal, her first at the collegiate level, while Macy Helmstetter had the helper on Fretwell’s goal in the 40th minute. Brigitte Sander sent the cross to Goldberg, who converted in the 89th minute.

    Barton visits Francis Marion on Wednesday, Sept. 25.

    Winless weekend at Wilson Gym for Bulldogs

    Barton dropped both of its first two Conference Carolinas matches at Wilson Gymnasium this season, falling in five sets to Belmont Abbey on Friday before being swept by Converse on Saturday afternoon.

    Their fourth straight loss left the Bulldogs 1-7 overall and 0-2 in conference action. Barton will host Francis Marion in a league match Wednesday, Sept. 25.

    Barton lost an agonizing fifth set 15-13 after rallying to win games 3 and 4 by 25-22, 26-24 margins. Abbey (2-7, 1-0 CC) won the first two sets 25-20, 25-19.

    Henly Sleight led the Bulldogs with 16 kills to go with 12 digs while Lily Haaga added 13 kils. Hailey Strey had 29 assists and Isabella Ream handed out 18 assists. Lilly Meyer came up with 24 digs.

    In Saturday’s 25-16, 25-20, 25-19 loss to Converse (8-3, 2-0 CC), Madeline Hope totaled five kills, two blocks and two aces while Sleight led again with seven kills Strey had 18 assists and two aces while Meyer came up with 14 digs.

    CROSS-COUNTRY

    BC te ams compete at adidas XC Challenge

    CARY — Running against a field of largely NCAA Division I competition, the men’s and women’s cross-country teams each placed 14th, or last, Friday at the adidas XC Challenge at WakeMed Soccer Park in the second meet of the season for Barton.

    Sophomore Jacob Oliver paced the Bulldog men in the 6K race, finishing in 20 minutes, 43 seconds to finish 126th. Also scoring for the Barton men were Brandon Waller (135th, 21:14), Nolan Gamwell (141st, 21:23), Luis Antunez (156th, 22:59) and Isaac Valle (162nd, 25:13).

    N.C. State’s Brett Gardner won the men’s race in 17:37 while Liberty edged the Wolfpack for the team win.

    Ansley Whilden led the Barton women with a time of 26:13 in the 5K race, good for 150th place while Aniya Heckstall (156th, 30:19), Keiarra Tutt (157th, 31:37), NeAjia Hatfield (160th, 34:23, Kaleigh Dalton (162nd, 39:02) and Erica Harrell (163rd, 39:02) also ran for the Bulldogs.

    Clemson’s Judy Kosgei was the women’s winner in 16:11 while N.C. State took the team title with Clemson second.
