It's the first full day of autumn. So are you ready to light the fireplace, put on a sweater, and sip some hot chocolate?

Well, that's too bad, because the outlook for the new season is warmer-than normal.

"We are in a La Niña," said LSU Health Climatologist Barry Keim. "During La Niñas, what typically happens is, the jet stream draw further north."

Keim says that means it won't be pushing cooler air from up north down to us, meaning above-average temperatures this fall.

"That's essentially what we can expect moving forward from this point," said Keim.

He said it could also extend hurricane season well past its mid-September peak.
