CANTON, Conn. (WTNH) — How would you like to adopt a four-day work week?

A Connecticut town is doing just that. The Town of Canton just launched the new schedule for four months to start, in a pilot program aimed at enhancing services for residents while giving staff a shorter work week.

Town officials hope despite being closed Fridays, the extended hours during the week will make town services more accessible to residents needing in-person assistance. Plus, they expect a cost savings for taxpayers, with town buildings being closed Fridays.

“Many of the reasons residents visit town hall can be accomplished electronically as we have seen a decline in foot traffic throughout the years,” First Selectman Kevin Witkos said in a statement.

“Additionally, the four-day work week for town staff recognizes the proper work-life balance that we believe will have a positive effect on our talented hard-working staff and enable them to better serve the community Monday -Thursday,” he continued.

Starting Monday, Sept. 16, the Town Hall and Senior & Social Services Department revised their hours.

The Town Hall will now operate:

    • Monday and Tuesday: 8 am. to 5 p.m.
    • Wednesday: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
    • Thursday: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
    • Friday: Closed

The Senior & Social Services Department will now operate:

    • Monday through Thursday: 7:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.
    • Friday: Closed

Other local towns have adopted the four-day work week, including Plainville, Vernon, and Mansfield.

Canton officials encourage residents to submit their thoughts on the new schedule to 4dayworkweek@townofcantonct.org .
