Inside the Pennsylvania ammo plant helping Ukraine fight back against Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited a Pennsylvania ammunition factory on Sunday, Sept. 22, to express gratitude to workers producing 155 mm artillery shells, critical to Ukraine's defense against Russian ground forces. The Scranton Army Ammunition Plant has ramped up production significantly over the past year, with Ukraine receiving more than 3 million shells from the U.S.

Zelenskyy's trip marks the beginning of a hectic week for him in the U.S., where he is scheduled to speak at the U.N. General Assembly and hold discussions with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris concerning Ukraine's defense strategies.

Zelenskyy is advocating for access to longer-range missile systems to target Russian territory, although the U.S. has shown restraint, worried about escalating the conflict.

During his visit, Zelenskyy will also present his "Plan for Victory" to Biden, members of Congress, and global leaders on Thursday, Sept. 26. The plan details Ukraine's strategy for triumph in the war against Russia and securing lasting peace.

The U.S. has boosted its production lines to manufacture over 40,000 155 mm rounds per month, aiming to increase this to 100,000 rounds monthly. This increase accompanies a forthcoming $375 million military aid package for Ukraine, which includes essential 155 mm artillery shells.

Zelenskyy's visit occurs as Russia intensifies attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure before the critical winter months. Despite concerns about ammunition shortages, the U.S. has pledged continual support to help Ukraine.

The U.S. has already provided Ukraine with significant military support, including various types of ammunition, missiles, and air defense systems, totaling over $55.7 billion since February 2022 .

This support is viewed as essential by many European nations to deter further military aggression by Russia, which could threaten NATO member countries and potentially escalate into a broader conflict.
