Harris Campaign Declines to Answer If She’ll Fulfill 2019 Promise to Offer Citizenship to 2 Million ‘Dreamers’

Vice President and Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris is not revealing whether she would fulfill a 2019 promise to offer citizenship to 2 million Dreamers, or individuals brought into the United States illegally as children, if elected.

Axios’ Alex Thompson and Stef Kight recently reached out to the Harris campaign to ask if she still intended to use executive orders to offer a pathway to citizenship to those Dreamers and “shield more than 6 million undocumented immigrants from deportation,” using work authorizations and parole powers among other measures

Campaign spokesman Ian Sams offered a statement expressing Harris’s general posture toward Dreamers, but not an answer on the specific policy questions posed by Axios.

“The vice president has fought for Dreamers throughout her career and is proud of the actions taken under her and President Biden to expand protections for them, including the executive action President Biden took this year, which she supported,” said Sams. “As president, she’ll continue to protect Dreamers while also pushing the bipartisan border deal that will dramatically strengthen border security.”

Thompson and Kight requested a “brief interview” in which Harris could clarify her position, but the campaign declined that request.

The Harris campaign’s refusal to be specific about the candidate’s position was reminiscent of another recent episode involving Thompson. While the campaign has asserted that Harris “does not support an electric vehicle mandate,” it refused to answer if she would sign or veto a bill requiring that all vehicles produced in the United States be powered by electricity or hydrogen by 2040 that she cosponsored during her time time in the Senate.

On the campaign trail in 2019, Harris said she would push that deadline up to 2035.
