The Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) has arrested a suspect involved in a hit-and-run that resulted in the death of a woman on Saturday night.

At approximately 9:33 p.m. on September 21, BSO deputies and Pompano Beach Fire Rescue responded to a call about a hit-and-run at 130 S.W. Eighth St. Upon arrival, they found two victims: Brenda Hernandez Amaya, 29, and Omar Munguia-Henrique, 32. Both had been struck and dragged by a vehicle. Hernandez Amaya was transported to Broward Health North, where she was pronounced dead from her injuries. Munguia-Henrique was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

BSO detectives from the Homicide and Crime Scene Units began their investigation. Preliminary findings revealed that a verbal dispute had occurred between Hernandez Amaya and the suspect, Edwin Amaya, 32, regarding their shared child.

During the argument, Edwin Amaya reportedly got into his Ford F-250 truck, reversed, and intentionally struck Hernandez Amaya. As he drove away, he hit parked cars while Munguia-Henrique attempted to hang onto the vehicle before falling to the ground. Edwin Amaya then fled the scene on foot.

A short time later, deputies located Edwin Amaya in the 700 block of South Dixie Highway and arrested him. He is now facing a charge of premeditated murder and has been transported to the Broward County Main Jail.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact BSO Homicide Detective Steve Novak at 954-321-4325 or submit a tip through the SaferWatch App. Anonymous tips can be sent to Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477) or online at browardcrimestoppers.org.
