Deion Sanders apologizes for 'unprofessional' end to Colorado Buffaloes win

Colorado head coach Deion Sanders issued a heartfelt apology to Baylor coach Dave Aranda after fans prematurely stormed the field during the Buffaloes’ thrilling overtime win over the Bears.

In the closing moments of Saturday’s back-and-forth game, Baylor looked to be on the verge of sending the contest into double overtime with a first-and-goal play from the 2-yard line. As Bears running back Dominic Richardson rumbled his way towards the end zone, however, he was promptly met by two-way star player Travis Hunter , who drilled him in the midsection and forced a fumble .

The football subsequently rolled out of the back of the endzone, seemingly putting the finishing touches on Colorado’s 38-31 victory. But before the Buffaloes’ come from behind win was confirmed, officials had to review the play to ensure that Richardson didn’t cross the plane prior to coughing up the ball.

Fans in attendance apparently weren’t inclined to wait for the officials to make up their mind, as droves of Buffaloes supporters poured onto the field. The Colorado PA announcer tried their best to subdue the chaotic scene, announcing over the speakers: "Ladies and gentlemen, please exit the field, the play is under review."

Once the ruling on the field was officially confirmed as a fumble, another wave of fans flooded onto the gridiron. Though vibes appeared to be at an all-time high in Boulder, one person in particular was less than pleased with the display at Folsom Field.

Speaking to reporters after the game, Sanders admitted that while he was happy about the result of the game, he was less than pleased with fans’ behavior. “I don’t like what transpired at the end of the game, but I love what transpired at the end of the game,” he said during a post-game press conference. “We have a fanbase that is phenomenal, we have some young kids on this campus that loves and breathes CU football and I’m thankful.”

Sanders then turned his attention to Baylor, revealing he was unable to give the team and Aranda due respect after a hard-fought battle. “I wanna apologize to the opposition,” he added.

“The way we stormed the field, I didn’t get an opportunity to go and shake the head coach’s hand, but I did try to go to their locker room and wait it out until he came out. But I don’t think they got the word to him because it’s not professional. I wanted to shake his hand and acknowledge him.”

Thanks to the victory, Sanders and Colorado improved to 3-1 on the season following additional wins over North Dakota State and Colorado State. The Buffaloes will look to match their entire win total from a year prior by defeating UCF on the road next week.
