Library Forced To Close After A DVD Filled With Bugs Was Found Return Box

A Detroit-area library was forced to close down over the weekend after workers discovered bugs in a DVD somebody had returned . The Royal Oak Public Library said that workers found the bugs when they opened the DVD and immediately contacted a pest control company.

The DVD was returned on Friday (September 20) evening after the library had closed.

"Bugs entered the library in items in our book drop. Until we can identify and remediate the problem, we will remain closed," the library said in a post on Facebook .

The workers sent a photo of the bugs to the pest control company, which identified them as cockroaches. All the items in the book return were bagged up and placed in a garage as a precaution.

Library Director Sandy Irwin said she decided to close the library to allow the pest control company to make sure they didn't cause an infestation.

"Let's protect the staff, the library's materials, and the things we borrow from other libraries," Irwin said, according to The Detroit Free Press . "I'm a librarian, not a pest control professional, but I will look up 1,000 types of bugs."

The pest control company inspected the building and gave the all-clear, allowing the library to reopen on Monday afternoon.
