P. Diddy’s Streams Increase After Indictment and Arrest

Sean Combs’ (“Diddy’s”) massive music catalog witnessed an increase in music streams since his arrest and indictment.

Under Comb’s multitude of musical monikers — which includes P. Diddy, Puff Daddy, and Diddy — the industry analytics and data company Luminate claimed his music witnessed an 18.3 percent rise in on-demand music streams during the time of his arrest, as compared with the previous week.

A music business management professor with Berklee College of Music, George Howard, stated that he isn’t shocked by this increase. To him, the jump in music streaming is similar to a Google search of Diddy as a way to satisfy curiosity.

With Seans’ multitude of business ventures — from Ciroc vodka to Revolt TV, both of which the artist is no longer associated with — Mr. Howard said a lot of people probably think of the music mogul as a businessman before imagining him as a musician.

According to Howard, the natural curiosity these kinds of charges cause makes sense. He added that it is akin to driving by an automobile accident. People will look.

A rise in music streaming numbers after any type of controversy isn’t unusual. Following a documentary on R. Kelly, when he was accused of sexual misconduct that involved underage girls and women, his numbers almost doubled.

The professor also said that the “anonymization” of music streaming is also something that might’ve led to this increase for both Kelly and Combs.

Diddy is charged with racketeering and federal sex trafficking and the indictment, detailing allegations that date back to 2008, accuses the artist of coercing, threatening, and abusing women for years in order “to conceal his conduct, protect his reputation, and fulfill his sexual desires.” Diddy has pled not guilty to all charges.
