New Parking and Sidewalks Coming to Foley’s Growing Business District

Foley is making moves to support its growing business community, and it’s doing it in style.

With parking spots in high demand and local businesses booming, the city is addressing the need for more parking along East Verbena Avenue.

But that's not all—Foley’s efforts go beyond parking, focusing on improving pedestrian access and tackling drainage issues in a way that’s proactive and efficient.

The city’s leaders, including Mayor Ralph Hellmich, are all in, recognizing that these improvements will make life easier for residents and visitors alike, while giving local businesses a much-needed boost.

Turning Open Ditches into Parking Gold

One of the big upgrades involves turning a less-than-ideal situation into something pretty sweet: new parking.

Foley plans to replace the open ditches along East Verbena Avenue with culverts, creating extra space for parking without compromising pedestrian access.

This move is especially important as Foley continues to see increased foot traffic, thanks to upgrades already made in the area like new sidewalks, lighting, and road work.

“It’s a lot of bang for the buck,” Mayor Hellmich said of the changes, and it’s easy to see why.

The city will be able to do much of the work itself, keeping things local and efficient while solving two issues—parking and drainage—at once.

    Helping Local Businesses Thrive

Currently, three restaurants call East Verbena Avenue home, with a fourth on the way.

The new parking area will directly benefit these businesses by making it easier for customers to find a spot and stop in for a bite to eat.

And with more people able to park and walk around the area, it’s a win-win for everyone involved.

Mayor Hellmich pointed out that this project is all about supporting the community: “It’s another thing that our city does to help support local existing businesses.”

As the area continues to develop, these types of improvements ensure that Foley’s businesses stay busy and successful, bringing more life (and visitors) to the city.

More than Just Parking: Sidewalks and Access

But Foley’s improvements don’t stop with East Verbena Avenue.

The city has also given the green light to extend sidewalks along Alabama 59, creating safer and more accessible paths for pedestrians.

The new sidewalks will stretch south to Commercial Bank, making it easier for residents and visitors to explore the area on foot.

These upgrades, combined with the parking improvements, show that Foley is thinking ahead and planning smart.

The city is actively finding ways to accommodate its growing community, from businesses to pedestrians, while maintaining its charm and accessibility.

A City That Keeps Moving Forward

Foley is taking a proactive approach to ensuring its infrastructure keeps pace with its growth.

By addressing issues like parking and drainage while simultaneously improving access, the city is setting itself up for continued success.

These changes are making Foley a better place to live, visit, and do business, all while keeping the community’s needs front and center.

And while we’re watching from across the bay in Mobile, we’ve got to give Foley credit—this kind of forward-thinking planning is what makes neighboring cities thrive.

    Keep it up, Foley!
