The Mississippi State University Crosby Arboretum was among several local organizations recognized with a Mississippi Gulf Coast National Heritage Area (MGCNHA).

MGCNHA aims to support economic growth in Mississippi’s lower six counties by focusing on the area’s natural, cultural, and historical resources. The initiative, funded by the National Park Service and the state of Mississippi, is managed by the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources.

The Arboretum qualified for the award through its involvement with Gulf Coast Outpost, a recognition program for nature-based tourism businesses and organizations. MGCNHA honors those who actively work to protect the coastal environment.

The Crosby Arboretum, Gulf Coast Eco Tour, and Back House Garden also received the award.

The presentation occurred during the Crosby Arboretum’s Bug Fest, an educational event featuring various organizations and vendors who shared their expertise on insects, from everyday butterflies to rare species seldom seen in the region.
