Orange Avenue between Fifth and Seventh streets will be closed for two weeks for utility and roadwork.

The city will close the street starting at 10 p.m. Sept. 29. It's expected to reopen at 5 p.m. Oct. 11.

Here's how the closure could affect your drive:

Brightline anniversary: Brightline marking 1 year of passenger trains through the Treasure Coast

Fort Pierce detour: A1A between U.S. 1 and Old Dixie closed today for next 2 years

    Orange Avenue detours

    • Westbound: Take North Fifth Street to Avenue A to North Seventh Street
    • Eastbound: Take South Seventh Street to Atlantic Avenue to South Fifth Street

    Why is Orange Avenue closed?

The $5.4 million project began in May and is estimated to be completed by summer 2025, according to the Florida Department of Transportation. The project is designed to improve Orange Avenue with:

    • Milling and resurfacing the existing roadway
    • Pedestrian and ADA upgrades by reconstructing pedestrian sidewalk curb ramps to upgrade lighting at signalized intersections and installing a new pedestrian mid-block signal at South Eighth Street
    • Signal and lighting enhancements by adding reflective border to existing traffic signal backplates for increased visibility of signal lights
    • Upgrading vehicle detection at the signalized intersections of Fifth and Seventh streets
    • Bicycle shared-lane markings on travel lanes from east of 13th Street to U.S. 1.
