PORTLAND, Ind. — A tornado touched down near Portland on Sunday evening, causing significant damage, particularly to the Jay County Jr.-Sr. High School. The National Weather Service confirmed the tornado's occurrence following reports from the Jay County Sheriff's Office around 8:00 PM.

The storm resulted in roof and tree damage at the high school, with several nearby homes also sustaining structural damage. In response to the situation, the Jay School Corporation has announced the closure of Jay schools for Monday, September 23rd, with no e-Learning sessions scheduled.

While no tornado warning was in effect for Jay County at the time, Delaware County was under a special weather statement indicating the potential for landspouts. Additionally, another tornado touched down in Yorktown, near Muncie, which the National Weather Service is set to evaluate and rate on Monday.

Local authorities are working to assess the full extent of the damage and ensure the safety of residents in the affected areas.
