SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The University of Notre Dame welcomes Dr. Kate Biberdorf, widely known as “Kate the Chemist,” as its new Professor for the Public Understanding of Science. With plans to transform South Bend into a vibrant hub for chemistry outreach, Dr. Biberdorf aims to make complex scientific concepts accessible and engaging for the public.

With appearances on major platforms like The Wendy Williams Show, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and The Kelly Clarkson Show, Dr. Kate is no stranger to captivating audiences with her explosive science demonstrations. “My goal is to help people build their own understanding of raw data so that they can make informed decisions influenced by the latest developments in STEM,” she stated.

    A Vision for Science Communication

Dr. Biberdorf envisions her role extending beyond the classroom. “In five years, it’s going to be international—hold me to that,” she said, expressing her ambition for Notre Dame to become a trusted source for scientific information that influences personal and political decisions.

She is also focused on securing funding for groundbreaking research at the university. “I’m going to start with those who want help. There’s a colleague here who has grant potential, and I aim to assist with informal science communication,” she explained. Securing National Institutes of Health (NIH) and National Science Foundation (NSF) grants is a priority, as these funds are vital for scientific advancement.

    Innovative Media Projects

Dr. Biberdorf plans to initiate documentary projects within three years, utilizing the university's resources and student talent in media and film. “The Dean wants to host a media festival—think Bonnaroo for science communicators,” she shared, highlighting her desire to blend science with creative storytelling.

Additionally, she is set to create engaging YouTube shorts in a newly established makers studio, expected to be completed by January 1, 2025. “It’s a camera-friendly lab—half wet lab for experiments and half studio,” Biberdorf noted, aiming to make science visually captivating.

    A Historic Role

The role of Professor for the Public Understanding of Science, first established at Oxford nearly 30 years ago, is now making its debut in the United States at Notre Dame. “We are bringing this role to campus for the first time,” Dr. Biberdorf emphasized, drawing inspiration from Richard Dawkins, a prominent figure in science communication.

Originally from Kalamazoo, Michigan, Dr. Biberdorf sees this position as a homecoming and a chance to engage her community. “My chemistry journey started at Portage Central High School, and now I’m thrilled to be back in Michiana,” she said.

With a five-year contract at Notre Dame, Dr. Biberdorf is eager to kickstart her community engagement projects and inspire a new generation of science enthusiasts.
