South Bend Schools Revise Bus Routes Amid School Closures

As South Bend Community Schools (SBCS) implements changes to their bus routes, students and parents are navigating the implications of the recent closures of Clay High School and Warren Elementary. This shift is part of the district's master facility plan, which aims to streamline transportation for students.

    Key Changes in Transportation

The restructuring of bus routes means that some students may be uncertain about their eligibility for bus pickups. Latoya King, SBCS Transportation Director, explained, “It’s pretty much about the master facility plan. As we reviewed the feeder patterns, some of the boundaries changed. Any student within these updated boundaries will receive transportation.” The elimination of shuttle buses—previously used to transport students between schools—will lead to more direct routes, reducing the need for transfers.

    Adjustments and Boundary Check

With the new school year set to begin on August 15, adjustments to bus routes are underway. Parents and students can verify their eligibility for bus services by checking if they fall within the designated boundary zones. SBCS encourages families to utilize the district’s call center for clarity on transportation eligibility. “Our call center is fully operational now, and we have staff ready to assist,” King noted. By entering a student’s name or address, parents can quickly determine their transportation options.

    Enhancing the Bus Fleet

In response to the new transportation demands, SBCS has also expanded its bus driver staffing. King reported, “We’ve been working hard on recruiting drivers, and offering more hours has been a great incentive.” The district’s afterschool extended learning programs provide additional hours for drivers, helping to attract around 10 to 15 new drivers this summer. Moreover, the recruitment strategy includes hiring drivers already certified with their Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDLs), allowing for a quicker onboarding process.

    Conclusion

As South Bend Community Schools adapt to recent changes, clear communication and updated routes will ensure students have access to reliable transportation. Parents are encouraged to reach out to the call center for any questions regarding bus pickups and boundary zones as the new school year approaches.
