Hickory, North Carolina, has earned national recognition for its “charming” Main Avenue, ranking No. 9 on USA Today’s 10Best list of must-visit main streets.

The ranking celebrates streets that serve as cultural hubs and the “hearts of their communities.”

Hickory, located about 55 miles northwest of Charlotte, was praised for preserving its historic downtown, offering a vibrant destination filled with unique shops, restaurants, and outdoor dining in a picturesque, park-like setting.

In addition to Hickory’s honor, North Carolina’s Wilmington Riverwalk secured the No. 8 spot in the best riverwalks category.

This scenic waterfront destination was recognized for its proximity to shops and dining, and its annual Riverfest, which brings live music, vendors, and fireworks to the area each October. Visitors can also explore the nearby USS North Carolina battleship.

Though both Hickory and Wilmington were highlighted, other North Carolina spots missed out on recognition in 10Best’s additional categories, which focused on parks, town squares, and public spaces.

Howell, Michigan, took the top spot for main streets, while Cincinnati’s riverwalk claimed first place in its category.

What’s your favorite destination for a scenic stroll in North Carolina?
