As has been the norm thus far this season, Cranberry’s Darien Wenner was the pacesetter, shooting a 6-over-par 41 on the 2,218-yard women’s layout to earn medalist honors. It was Wenner’s sixth win in as many events in what has proven to a break-out season for the freshman. Wenner’s score was 10 strokes better than that of event runner-up Mallory McMasters of Moniteau, who shot a 51. Keystone’s Ashlee Albright finished third with a 52, one stroke behind McMasters. Ruby Watson (55) of A-C Valley was fourth, with Kali Clark of Keystone and Sophee Hazlet of Moniteau putting up 56s to tie for fifth. Cranberry (151), behind the scores of Wenner, McMasters, and Scrivens, beat Keystone and Moniteau, who tied for second with team scores of 171. Keystone used the cards of Albright, Clark, and had the choice of either Jillian Winters or Jerzey Bell, both recording 63s. It was only Winters second outing of the season, while Bell was making her debut. Scoring for Moniteau were Hazlett, Roxberry, and either Brown or Carr, both tying with 58s. A-C Valley and Karns City were not in contention for a team placement, both squads only fielding two golfers (three scores are required). Megamatch 6: Hi-Level Golf Course (September 19, 2024)The girls took to the 2,209-yard front-nine at Hi-Level for the fourth time this season. Like she has done at the three previous Hi-Level matches, and at every other event this season for that matter, Cranberry’s Darien Wenner earned medalist honors. The Berries’ freshman carded a 41 on the par 34 layout, besting runner-up Hayden Hilliard (46) of Moniteau by five strokes. “Today was pretty good,” offered Wenner. “It was a little hot out and I was a little nervous because I don’t really play good in the heat, but I did pretty well. “My driver was doing really well today. I was hitting the ball straight and it was going pretty far for me. I have to focus on hitting down on the ball more; sometimes I just lift my head up and it just grounders [her drives].” Cranberry coach Brad Earp discussed Wenner’s success. “That’s a Wenner trait, right, they’re competitive athletes,” Earp said. (Darien’s brother Dane and Dalton excel at golf, wrestling, and track.) “She has the mentality that she wants to win, and that makes a big difference.” Hilliard talked about her second place, the Warrior golfer’s best finish of the season. “I think my chipping was a little better than my last match. That’s what I’ve been struggling with, so I think that brought some strokes down,” she said. “At the beginning of the season I was really bad with my attitude. I think that’s a lot of what golf is [mindset] and I think keeping a better thought process has helped me out a lot.” Moniteau’s Gabriella Shearer and Cranberry’s Mallory McMasters shared third with 47s. Shearer’s round was her best of the year. “Last match, at Foxburg, I struggled a lot. It was the attitude side–I got in my head a little bit and didn’t think I could do it [play well]. I went in today thinking I could do it and I stayed as calm as I could,” Shearer reported. “I listened to my mom about it too, because I talked her about it [mindset] and she said, ‘if you stay calm, you’ll do good.’ I went out and stayed calm and said, ‘It’s going to be the best I can ever play.’ I shot my best score today [of the season].” McMasters, who posted her fourth top-3 of the campaign, said, “I think I’m really improving, especially since it’s getting toward the end of the season. I think I’m going to do okay at districts [scheduled for Oct. 2 at Kane Country Club]. I hope I can get my swing going, keeping it consistent, and get my chips working, work on my putting a little bit – kind of line my putts up a little bit more, get them the right speed.” Sophee Hazlett (46) of Moniteau was fifth, a season high for her. Rounding out the Top 10 in the 28-golfer field were Keystone’s Ashlee Albright (50) and Moniteau’s Juliette Brown (50) sharing sixth; Brook Scrivens (51) of Cranberry in eighth; and Keystone’s Jillian Winters, Moniteau’s Cara Roxberry, and Cranberry’s Mackenzie Kennedy tied for ninth with 53s. Led by Wenner, McMasters, and Scrivens, Cranberry finished first in the team competition (139), beating Moniteau (142) by three strokes. Cranberry ran its record to 7-0. The Cranberry coach commented, “I’m pretty proud of the girls this year. I don’t believe anybody on the team had golfed more than two or three years. We have only two seniors of the six girls on the team. We’re excited not just for this year, but for the future as well.” Moniteau, who as runner-up for the fourth time, counted the cards of Hilliard, Shearer, and Hazlett. “It’s been good battles, good competition [with Cranberry],” relayed Moniteau coach Sue Scialabba. “We’re getting better each match. I’m really proud of them, the way they’ve improved each match.” “It’s hard work, dedication, they’ve really been putting a lot of time in at the range and working on their skills, their drills, and it’s definitely paying off. We’ve tried to instill chipping and putting in them all year; those are the ways you get good scores and I think it’s helping.” Scoring for third-place Keystone (158) were Ashlee Albright, Jillian Winters, and Kali Clark (54). Playing for fourth-place A-C Valley/Union were Ruby Watson (58), Rayanne Sherry (61), and Reagan Best (62). “Literally, we go out and practice and seem to do better in practice than here at some of the events,” commented coach Bill Strauser. “I don’t know what the issue is. Our greens at Foxburg [where the team practices] are slower than the other courses we play. I don’t know, maybe it has something to do with that.” Karns City was represented by two golfers – Maddie Albee (58) and Sidney Schlieden – but did not have a team score (three players are needed).
