High school roundup: Panthers soccer cools off Chargers in 5-0 rout

North Pitt’s lopsided soccer scores this season have been a joint effort.

At one end, the Panthers always seem to pounce early and often, piling up first-half goals and being in a comfortable position to sit on leads and wait for their chances at insurance goals that usually come later.

At the other end, being able to sit on those leads has been helped by shutdown defense and goalkeeping that hasn’t allowed opponents to pounce at all.

So far this season, NP (11-1, 2-1 Eastern Plains Conference) is averaging almost four goals in the first half alone (3.8), has amassed nine clean sheets in 12 games and has four in a row and counting.

The trends held true again on Monday night at Ayden-Grifton. North Pitt slammed home two first-half goals, three more in the second and didn’t allow a goal in a 5-0 shutout.

The Panthers, whose lone loss is to rival Greene Central, plays at Washington on Wednesday.

After winning two straight, the Chargers (3-6, 1-2) have now lost two in succession and will try to regain their footing at home against SouthWest Edgecombe on Wednesday.

Farmville Central 7, West Craven 0

Despite playing just its third match of the season on Monday night, the Jags didn’t show any rust and evened their EPC record at 1-1 with an easy win.

It was the first victory in three tries for Farmville (1-1-1), who got a shutout from goalkeeper Trey Williford.

    FC hosts Ayden-Grifton on Thursday.

John Paul II 2, Wayne Country Day 1

The Saints won their 10th match of the season on Monday on the road against the Chargers.

Senior Noah Semanko and sophomore Samuel Jones scored the goals for JPII (10-2, 7-1), and freshman Diego Escobar added an assist in the victory. Sophomore Christian Reyes made three saves to preserve the lead.

Winners of five straight, the Saints travel to Parrott Academy on Wednesday.

    Clinton 3, J.H. Rose 0

The Rampants were on the wrong end of a shutout on Monday night in non-conference action in Clinton.

The Dark Horses carried a 1-0 lead into halftime and Rose (5-5-1) had no answers in the second as the hosts bagged a pair of insurance goals.

Rose returned home to host South Central in a Big Carolina Conference match on Tuesday and then hosts Havelock in BCC action Thursday.

    VOLLEYBALL Ayden-Grifton 3, South Central 0

The Chargers showed their might once again in Monday’s non-conference shutout over visiting South Central.

It was a different match than Ayden-Grifton’s come-from-behind, five-set triumph over the Falcons earlier this season in Winterville. This time, the Chargers got it done in three consecutive 25-17, 25-18, 25-23 set wins.

A-G (19-1) was back on the court Tuesday night in EPC action at home against Farmville Central before going to Greene Central on Thursday. South Central (9-5, 5-2) also had a quick, tough turnaround in facing J.H. Rose at home Tuesday before trekking to New Bern on Thursday.

    Goldsboro 3, Greene Central 1

The Rams saw their record evened once again at home against a tough 7-3 Goldsboro team in non-conference play.

It completed a season sweep for Goldsboro, which also topped the Rams on Sept. 9.

Greene Central (8-8) returns to conference play on Wednesday night at SouthWest Edgecombe.

    GIRLS’ GOLF Falcons claim 1st

The South Central girls’ golf team carded a team score of 125 on Monday to leave the field in the distance and win a BCC match at Carolina Colours Golf Club in New Bern.

The closest team to the Falcons was Havelock some 10 strokes behind at 135. D.H. Conley (144) took fourth while J.H. Rose (152) was sixth.

Conley’s Payton Sloan posted the low team score for the Vikings with a 46, followed by Madison Muise and Lucy Lefever who both had a 49.

South Central leads the BCC ahead of New Bern and Conley.
