PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Portsmouth Police responded to a shooting Tuesday morning on Gilmerton and Prentis avenues.

Officers arrived on the 300 block of Gilmerton Avenue around 10:20 a.m. and found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. The Portsmouth police mobile command unit, detectives and forensics blocked off the area to investigate.

On the scene, police placed a black tarp around an area on the sidewalk.

Neighbors in the area told 10 On Your Side that, just after 10 a.m., they heard gunshots, and screams.

“I heard the gunshots,” said a person in the area. “I heard someone screaming. When I came outside, the fire truck was out here, … the police cars [were] out here, it was just a lot going on.”

A witness said a man was lying on the ground with an injury to his head — that was before police put up a black tarp around his lifeless body.

“Don’t take life for granted. Stop living life like you got something to prove,” said the witness.

Other neighbors said people in the area are shaken up by the recent shooting, and added that there is a lot of foot traffic along the street.

“There are many kids running around here, and God forbid if it was some kind of teacher workday or school day where the kids are out of school. [There are] kids always walking up and down the street. You have to think about them. The kids are the future,” said a nearby resident. “I hope for a change. I understand people die every day, but it needs to be more deaths by natural causes as opposed to deaths by violence.”

There are no additional details at this time.
