<body><div>WESTMORLAND — A 25-year-old Salton City resident was killed on Monday evening, Sept. 23, outside Westmorland when he apparently drove his vehicle into the passing trailer of a semi truck heading in the opposite direction, according to a coroner investigator.The man was driving his Scion compact vehicle south on Martin Road north of Highway 86/Highway 78 and the tractor-trailer rig was heading north, according to Imperial County sheriff’s Deputy Coroner Jose Caloca.The Sheriff’s Office activity logs reported the vehicle had caught fire with a body inside, but Caloca said the fire was confined to the engine compartment and the man had died from injuries sustained in the collision with the trailer.“There were no thermal injuries on the body,” Caloca added.The accident, which is under the jurisdiction of the California Highway Patrol, is still under investigation. Caloca could not say whether drugs or alcohol is believed to be a factor and said toxicology is pending.Crowd control was requested at the scene, according to the sheriff’s log.
