FALL RIVER — A Fall River man was sentenced to life in prison for stalking and shooting to death a man downtown in broad daylight in 2018 .

Keishon Workman , 25, of Fall River, was convicted of first-degree murder and carrying an illegal firearm after a two-week trial in Fall River Superior Court. Judge Thomas McGuire sentenced Workman to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 30 years.

In the afternoon of Valentine’s Day 2018, Workman, then 19, found Maurice Timberlake, 24, in the area of South Main and Morgan streets, near the T.A. Restaurant, and shot him seven times at close range in the head and chest.

Workman fled and was arrested at gunpoint following a foot pursuit. He initially denied to police that he shot Timberlake, but allegedly conceded when confronted with surveillance footage that showed a shooter wearing the same all-gray sweatsuit police say Workman was wearing when interviewed by authorities.

What was the motive for the Timberlake killing?

At the time, Workman allegedly told Fall River Detective John McDonald that he became angry when he saw Timberlake walking on the street, because Timberlake had shot him in the leg a few years prior, according to a police report.

Police said Workman retrieved a gun he had hidden in a Griffin Street yard, then located Timberlake and ambushed him.

    The defendant's criminal history

In August 2016, Workman was arrested on charges of dealing heroin and crack following an investigation in Griffin Park. In June 2017, Workman was one of 13 people arrested in a drug sweep in Fall River. He was charged with assault and battery in addition to intent to distribute drugs. At the time of that arrest, police reported that Workman had a total of 13 outstanding warrants.

Workman’s sentence includes possibility of parole because he was 19 at the time of the crime; in January, the state Supreme Judicial Court ruled that people under age 21 cannot be sentenced to life without possibility of parole.

District Attorney Quinn: Family waited six years for justice

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Tara Burdman and Troy Murphy.

Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn III thanked the prosecution team and the jurors for their service.

“This was a premeditated and brutal killing in broad daylight on a city street," Quinn said. “The victim was shot seven times and the lives and safety of other innocent people were put in jeopardy by the defendant’s action. As stated in the victim impact statements after the verdict, this senseless murder has upended the lives of the victim’s family who loved him very much. I thank them for their patience during the past six years waiting for the opportunity to have the defendant held accountable by the jury. I hope the verdict brings some solace to the victim’s family.”
