Dearborn police find gun, body armor in recently paroled man's car after he fled traffic stop, ran across I-94

DEARBORN (WWJ) — A recently paroled man is back behind bars after running from Dearborn police officers during a traffic stop on Tuesday.

It all started around noon on Sept. 24 when officers made a traffic stop in the area of Schaefer Road and Rotunda Drive, just north of I-94.

When officers learned the man had traffic warrants and went to take him out of the car to arrest him, the man took off running, Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin told WWJ Newsradio 950’s Luke Sloan.

Officers chased the man for “quite some time,” ultimately losing sight of him after he hopped a fence near railroad tracks, according to the chief.

Shahin said the suspect ran across I-94 and “put a lot of people’s lives in danger,” but he did not say whether officers also crossed the freeway.

While officers continued to search for the suspect, other officers checked inside the man’s car and found a handgun and body armor.

Ultimately, Shahin said, the department used a drone and found the man “hiding down in some very tall brush” and he was taken into custody without incident.

The suspect, whose name and age have not been released, pending arraignment, was on parole for armed robbery and gun offenses, according to Shahin.

“And not a year and a half later, while still on parole, he’s got body armor and another firearm,” Shahin said. “So our officers were able to take a very dangerous individual off our streets to help keep our community safe.”

Shahin noted there was a two-car crash along I-94 in the area around the same time as the foot chase, but the two incidents were unrelated.
